Cook Conservation Area Work
For Immediate Release
Tuesday, April 18, 2012 Lancaster, MA
The Tiger Cub dens from Cub Scout Pack 9 Lancaster found a positive way to spend a few hours of their Spring Break. The boys, who were all first graders, visited the newly reopened Cook Conservation Area off of Route 70 to learn about wildlife and forest conservation. Each boy built, finished and installed a bluebird house - 16 in total - providing excellent new habitat for the waning species in Lancaster. Afterwards, the boys continued with a naturalization project in a section of the park along the Nashua River. The clean-up effort removed several bags of trash, old tires, and broken glass, and cleared three large piles of debris from the October '11 winter storm. The projects taught the boys important lessons about wildlife management and protection of forest resources, and helped each boy earn the World Conservation Award.

2012 Sugaring Tree Locations Map!
While running aroung town today collecting sap (well, really finding the buckets and lids where the wind left them and "resetting" many buckets) I collected GPS waypoints with my smartphone for each tree. I imported those waypoints into an interactive google map this way each tree location is known. Click Here! to play around in an interactive Google Map with all of the taken waypoints for the trees on it. Ken has put almost 400 miles on his truck this year collecting sap. Now that any of us can know where the trees are Ken can be relieved from having to drive every night to collect if you print out this map or import the waypoints into your own smartphone. To import the waypoints, view the map and click on the "KML" link next to "Rate This Map" and "Write a Comment". Then load the KML file into your phone's GPS application (I recommend GPS essentials for Android) and you are good to go!
